Caring For Your Work Boots

April 18, 2017

Buying a good pair of work boots is an investment in your health and safety, and when you find yourself a pair of boots that are not only right for the job, but also comfortable, you'll want to keep them in top condition for as long as possible.

Like most good things in life, you get back what you put in, and if you put a little time in to looking after your boots then they are sure to look after you.

Here are some basic tips to help care for leather and rubber work boots:

Leather boots

  • Always clean your boots after use by brushing caked dirt away from welts and seams, then wipe leather with a clean damp cloth
  • If your boots become wet, never dry by a fire or artificial heat source as this will cause the leather to harden and shrink and in extreme cases pull away from the sole
  • Always allow boots to dry at room temperature
  • To assist in making your boots water resistant and pliable you should dress and seal the leather after cleaning with a suitable leather dressing
  • Avoid exposing your boots to chemical contamination as this may reduce the life expectancy. Leather is absorbent by nature and strong acids and alkalis will do irreparable damage
  • In the event of exposure rinse the contamination from the boots thoroughly before applying a leather dressing

Rubber boots

  • Brush away caked dirt
  • Rinse boots thoroughly after every use
  • Wash with mild soap and water if needed
  • Store in a cool dry pace and out of direct sunlight
  • To prevent irreparable damage such as flaking, cracking or excessively dry rubber, it is important to treat boots regularly with rubber conditioner
  • Apply conditioner liberally for a soft cloth to clean, dry boots. Wipe away excess and allow the boots to dry overnight
